Hello Again!

 Hello and Welcome back!

Apologies to those returning as I have been a most absent Travelling Tuffeteer for the last five years, intitially a personal family trauma and then followed by the onset of Covid and all the limitations that it provided. I have now made the decision to bring the Travelling Tuffeteer back to festivals, eco educational sites, therapy groups and private functions. I will be offering the standard two hour workshop where a happy calm space is created to enable the making of a small, yet perfectly formed, tuffet which will be yours to take away to enjoy in the comfort of your own tent, van, cabin, house, garden - the list goes on!

Please feel free to contact me for any queries regarding workshops or sales, I will be happy to be making bespoke sized tuffets on request, from the very small to the the full 6' plus sleeping rolls.

Fund Raising for the Last Chance Hotel

Last Sunday was a great day for The Last Chance Hotel as they held a superb Halloween Dog show to raise funds.

I took the opportunity to go and visit along with funds raised from tuffet making at festivals. My little dog pictured below came to me via The Last Chance Hotel and I am eternally grateful  - so how could I help them?

It became clear that I could raise funds and awareness very simply by setting up my large peg loom at festivals and inviting the public to have a go and pay £1 for the privilege - their names go into a raffle and the winner wins the very tuffet made by the festival folk.

It has worked well and tuffets have been made at Grillstock, The Royal Cornwall Show, Farm Fest and Kehelland Apple Day.

South from The Green Gathering to Dartmoor Folk Festival - via The Sidmouth Folk Festival

I was reluctant to leave the Green Gathering where I'd had such a wonderful time, I definitely hope to run workshops there again next year! My next working festival was to be down in Dartmoor in the lovely small village of South Zeal. Firstly a little time out playing music and singing songs at the Sidmouth Folk Festival.
Dartmoor Festival.

The Dartmoor Folk Festival ran from August 9th, 10th and 11th and is a friendly traditional festival, with the highlight being the Dartmoor Step-dance and Broom-dance Championships!
The Craft area, Craft tent, Sideshows, Demonstrations, Dance Displays and Children's Entertainers are all held in the local playing fields where the general feel is of one of those rare days out in the 1900's when all the family dressed in their Sunday best and attended the annual fair - a truly lovely weekend is to be had here!

I was fortunate to have a prime view of all the events and to be situated next to a small stream that could be heard tumbling over the stony river bed. The tuffet-making workshops were well attended, I had a particularly memorable time with a lovely family, mum, dad and two teenage boys that all came along together to make a family collection of tuffets!

From Farmfest to The Green Gathering at Chepstow!

The Green Gathering!

On leaving Farmfest I made my way north-west to Chepstow for the Green Gathering, previously known as The Great Green Gathering, but now downsized for many reasons and rebuilt in the wonderful grounds of Piercefield Park pictured below. A wondefully landscaped park with secret views and magical places that included a grotto, druid's temple, bathing house and giant's cave,  over the Rivers Wye.

The organisers of Green Gathering plan the festival site around the contours of the park and transform the area into a wonderful space full of craft workshops, fun, music, healing, tee pees, saunas and enveloped with plenty of love! The recycling system is excellent, with sacks for every type of waste - definitely involved a lot of thought as to what you are actually throwing away, which added a new element to this festival. 

The craft area was exceptional with all stalls/workshop areas set in a wheel formation facing outwards! Such craft people as Oak Clan Forge, Waynes Wood Spoon Carving, upcycling with Rags to Riches and for something even more useful - wild foraging with Carol Hunt and then....................there was The Travelling Tuffeteer! I absolutely loved everything about this festival, the people, the setting, other stallholders and especially our brilliant craft organiser Simon Craig, who incidentally is an amazing coin carver!

From Buddhafield to Farm Fest -
Farmfest set in Bruton in Somerset is a very different festival to previous Tuffeteer experiences, filled with young party goers and many DJ tents. By far the best tent for me was the dub tent featuring The High Grade Rockers - great music, great company - a festival atmosphere all of it's own - we loved them!
The craft area was set above the music area and distracted quite a few revellers away from the music to attempt tuffet making and also mask making workshops!

I had the lovely Jaz (in the bright sari) to help and support the apprentice tuffetees and a very fine job she did. It was her first time and certainly won't be her last!! The folk above are selecting their fleece to begin their own tuffets. The weather was great on the Saturday but unfortunately became quite wet on the Sunday but this did not deter the music fans!

 One of the highlights of the festival is the annual hat competition - this is so important that it was monitored by the hat police - no hat then you were issued with the badge of shame! I particularly liked Farmer Giles and Farmer Gill complete with the model calf!!

A great festival for cider lovers and party animals!
The downside? - I was deeply saddened to see the amount of rubbish and waste left behind, the fields were littered with abandoned tents, ground mats, sleeping bags, airbeds, cans and bottles plus general litter everywhere. Many people were collecting things to avoid them going into ground fill - a lot of education is needed for these festival goers - anyone out there up for the challenge to design a fun anti-litter campaign that draws people in rather than pointing the finger?

Buddhafield Festival - the fire in the heart!

Each year Buddhafield has a theme and this year it was ' A Fire in the Heart'. Throughout the rituals many people wore something red to fit with the theme. 

I love this festival, and am not alone - check out the testimonials, due to the absence of drugs and alcohol, 3000 people enjoying each others company in discussion, music, chanting, song and lots of great veggie food and superb Chai tea!! 

I was fortunate to run my tuffet making workshops in a beautiful open yurt that provided a very comfortable, natural space that was shaded perfectly from the beautifully intense rays of the sun, which was very fitting with the theme for this year!

It's really great to have men and women of all ages tuffeting together!

I was lucky to have my beautiful assistant, Hazel, to help me this year - brilliant to be working together with someone to thread the looms, help all you lovely people when things appear to go wrong - but they don't really as every tuffet is unique yet still creates that perfect 'Bottom Heaven'! Workshops were overflowing with budding tuffetees sharing the love of true eco-friendly woolly goodness!

Royal Cornwall Show

The Royal Cornwall Show was a wonderful show this year bathed in sunshine - ice-creams everywhere!!  The Tuffeteer was there in the Farmer's Pavilion as part of the Cornish Association of Small holders and Producers (CASP). I had a great weekend and met many lovely people that were introduced to tuffets for the first time. I was accompanied by the lovely Millie, my new Jack Russell that I rehomed from The Last Chance Hotel - a dog rescue charity. An absolutely amazing group of people that work around the clock to save abandoned dogs. Their desperation to raise funds prompted me to have the public involved with making a five foot bench tuffet that was then entered into a prize draw. It raised £213 which was given to one of the hard-working folk from the Last Chance Hotel pictured below

Green Earth Awakening -24th -27th May

The Green Earth Awakening mini fest was enveloped in the most wonderful atmosphere of togetherness. Small in number, fair to middling weather - some sunshine some light rain and a group of folk that gelled more and more as the weekend went on. Great talks, crafts - I even made a wooden spoon with Wayne of Wayne's Spoons -

 A great workshop if you ever have the opportunity - he will be at The Green Gathering in Chepstow so hopefully you will be there too! My tuffet workshops were so packed we used every loom and sat out in the sunshine to make them.














My small looms designed for children have unfortunately never been terribly successful.........until now! It was discovered that when held by the feet it works really well, however there is a need for a degree of suppleness!!

Festivals, festivals, festivals!

I am really happy to announce that I am going to be attending a great number of events  this summer, some revisiting from last years others unknown and unchartered territory!!. Check the events quicklist on the right to see where and when! There are still more in the offing, awaiting confirmation and it is all so very exciting!!

Folk Festival season is upon us!

What a long wet winter we have had! The sun has begun to persevere, the buds are ripening and it is becoming clearer that winter has nearly left us albeit with a few snow showers to keep us on our toes! With the spring comes Easter closely followed by the first local festival of the season at Cheriton Fitzpaine in Devon - the wonder Crediton Folk Festival. The Tuffeteer will be present once again offering a workshop to make your own tuffet to use throughout the festival and for many 'seats' to come!

January Slumber is over! Tuffets new and old bursting forth for spring!!

 Well, after the latest rendition of 'Sleeping Tuffets' I have to pretend that winter is over and kick start into action. First things first - booking festivals, old and new, throughout the nation! I will have some great new deliciously sheepy items on the stall and will once again be running the raffle for the festival tuffet which was such a success last year. Keep on the lookout for a festival near you!!

Luxury fleece for wool tuffets!

After a long selection process I have finally filled my storeroom with some wonderful fleece from Bodmin Moor in Cornwall.  Beautiful browns and grey fleeces from the Herdwick, brown and white plus black and white Jacobs, beautiful long white fleece from the Scottie to give a lovely raggedy tuffet, the superb twisted fleece of the  Cheviot mule plus a few random crosses have all been stored away awaiting their day of tuffetdom!

Tuffet workshops at 2012 festivals deemed a success!!

Welcome back to another winter of exciting blogs and feedback from all the lovely people I have met this year! It is official -  tuffet festival workshops are popular and fun! It has been a year of excitement and experiment, what works, what doesn't - what can be improved! Space has been an amazing challenge with every festival different - from the wonderful indoor space at  the Bristol Folk Festival at Colston Hall in Bristol where apprentice tuffetees ranged from 6yrs to 60+ all walking proudly away with their own mini tuffet to soothe the buttocks on the less than comfy festival chairs, to the van and gazebo arrangement at the Wessex Festival in Weymouth. with the harbour as the most beautiful backdrop. 'Brizzle' tuffetees suggested I start a comments book which I put into action and have been astounded by the wonderful comments from everyone - relaxing, time-out, fun, productive, and more comments are to be found on the Travelling Tuffeteer Facebook page - which if you haven't visited yet then please do and make a comment if you will!!

The biggest challenge of the year so far has to have been Grillstock where the skies emptied and emptied and emptied!! Great music - great rain! Keeping everything dry was very tricky and running festival workshops almost impossible although between the showers action began again! But it did not dampen the spirits of most!

The raffle of the festival tuffet was most successful, bad luck to all those that did not win but thanks for participating. Festival goers are invited to buy a raffle ticket for £2 and spend 10 minutes contributing to the making of this magnificent 5' tuffet!

Budding  'tuffetees' have been busy in Devon and Dorset making their own Tam Tuffets in the  festival craft workshops at the Pennymoor Song and Ale fest and the Wessex Festival. The  natural craft workshops have been said to have brought a relaxing 'time-out' from the hub bub and fast pace of life! Young and old have enjoyed participating in this traditional craft creating their own tuffets from the choice of fleece available.

The absolutely best thing about making tuffets is that tuffets make you smile! Sitting on one, making one or just handling them on the stall - everyone smiles! Liam, above, bravely sat with older folk and worked really hard to create a woollen tuffet to be proud of, a brilliant moment of the festival. The biggest problem was holding dad back as he couldn't stop himself trying to help - definitely a 'wannabe tuffetee!'

Tuffet workshops at Bristol Folk Festival

Bristol Folk Festival proved to be a great experience for concert goers, musicians and apprentice 'tuffetees'!
Each night was headed with amazing bands, Saturday night Show of Hands, Sunday Cara Dillon and Monday night the Afro Celt Sound System - but that was not all by any means! Miranda Sykes and Rex Preston, The Young'uns, Whizz Jones, Tucker Zimmerman, Rory McLeod and the Familiar Strangers, 3 Daft Monkeys,

Mawkin - the list goes on and on........ Not only great entertainers but workshops, craft stalls, good food and great beer particularly Gem from the Bath brewery.

The Tuffeteer had a great workspace to run workshops thoughout the days and to sell a little piece of Bottom Heaven to the folk of Bristol - life is just simply incomplete without a tuffet! Check out more photos on the Tuffeteer's Facebook page.
